Founded in 1847 as the Stone Hill Wine Co. by German immigrant Michael Poeschel, Stone Hill Winery in Hermann, Missouri, is the state’s first winery and was once the second-largest winery in the United States. An acclaimed international award-winner, it earned top honors at eight World’s Fairs between 1873 and 1915. Its stone cellars, completed in 1869, were the largest of their kind in the country and were built just a year before Missouri became the nation’s leading wine-producing state.

However, the arrival of Prohibition in the 1920s greatly altered the American alcohol industry. Wineries, breweries and distilleries quietly crumbled, and speakeasies emerged in basements, down alleys and behind unmarked doors. For decades, Stone Hill’s once-thriving vineyard was left destroyed, its cellars repurposed as a mushroom farming facility.

That all changed in 1965 when Jim and Betty Held took a bold step to revive the historic winery, laying the foundation for Missouri wine and winemakers again. At the time, California’s wine scene, widely regarded as the face of American wine, had just begun regrowing roots. Napa Valley hadn’t yet opened its first post-Prohibition winery. Nationally, there were fewer than 70 wineries, and Missouri had none.

The Held family rebuilt from the ground up. They planted new vines across the region’s lush hills, rediscovered and reintroduced the Norton grape (now Missouri’s official state grape), aged their wines in a naturally cool 50-degree cellar, and embraced innovative hybrid varieties, proving that high-quality wines can be uniquely made in the Midwest.

“Looking back on these 60 years, it’s clear that the re-establishment of Stone Hill Winery was about more than restoring a single winery, it was about proving that the Midwest could produce world-class wine,” said Stone Hill Winery President Jon Held. “We are honored to continue that legacy today.”

In the decades since, the original Old Stone Hill Wine Co. site was designated a National Historic District and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Longtime winemaker Dave Johnson spent 40 years at Stone Hill, becoming the most awarded winemaker in the U.S. outside California. In 2024, the winery ranked in the Top 15 American Wines at the Decanter World Wine Awards and won its 15th Missouri Governor’s Cup for Best Wine in the state.

Today, Stone Hill Winery farms 192 acres of grapes across seven vineyard sites in the Hermann area, making it Missouri’s largest grape grower. With a focus on sustainable farming, it produces around 80,000 cases of wine each year. Stone Hill remains the most awarded winery east of the Rockies and welcomes over 150,000 visitors annually. Pioneered by the Held family’s vision, Missouri is now home to 125 wineries contributing approximately $5.46 billion annually to the state’s economy, according to WineAmerica.org.

Stone Hill recently launched their Heritage Grape Project, continuing its long-standing commitment to cultivating historic American grapes like the Norton and whether these cultivars can offer a sustainable path forward in today’s evolving wine landscape.

“[At this stage], what excites me the most is pushing the boundaries of what can be produced with the rediscovered historical varieties and modern sustainable hybrids that each showcase our region beautifully and thoughtfully,” said Stone Hill’s Vice President of Sales & Marketing Nathan Held.

This fall, Stone Hill celebrated its 60th anniversary with a weekend-long celebration. Friday’s dinner highlighted signature dishes from the Held family through the years. On Saturday, guests enjoyed behind-the-scenes access to the press house and cellars, where they witnessed grape processing and stomping, sampled fermenting wines directly from the tanks, and live music.

Keep the celebration going with a visit to Stone Hill Winery. Take a tour of the vineyard, eat in Stone Hill’s original stable and carriage house, the Vintage 1847 restaurant for German dishes with an American twist, or take a self-guided tour at their museum of historical winery artifacts.

For Christina Musgrave, food has always been meaningful: a form of creativity, memory and connection. Some of her earliest memories consist of crafting makeshift breakfasts for her parents, the early makings of her first charcuterie board: small plates of crackers, shredded cheese and pepperoni.

After several years in corporate America, Musgrave found herself drawn back into the kitchen and to her first love: food. Through her new blog, Tasting with Tina, she began documenting homemade meals and exploring food photography.

Over the next two years, her recipes evolved, her photography flourished, an audience grew, and a brand was born. Since then, Musgrave’s joy for cooking has taken her around the world, from leading a culinary retreat in Italy to partnering with top brands, and now the release of her highly anticipated debut cookbook.

Tasting Every Day: Easy Recipes for the Weeknight Cook brings Tasting with Tina into readers’ homes as a high-quality, approachable cookbook designed to be both a kitchen companion and a source of inspiration for weeknight cooking. The book features 50 delicious recipes that embody Musgrave’s philosophy: accessible, flavorful and beautiful dishes that can make weeknight cooking feel nearly effortless. Each recipe includes notes and substitutions to accommodate dietary needs, making it easy to adapt dishes for vegan or gluten-free lifestyles.

“It’s important to me that everyone feels included at the table,” Musgrave said. “I wanted to provide as many options as possible for different needs.”

These are the kinds of meals Musgrave would turn to after long corporate days. She now shares those same dishes with readers: elevated recipes that are simple to make and beautiful enough to impress.

Tasting Every Day celebrates flavor and ease, using familiar tools and pantry staples to create something extraordinary. Some of Musgrave’s favorites include the Caramelized Onion and Gruyère Tarts, buttery, flaky and perfect for entertaining, the Italian Shrimp and Grits, her twist on a classic dish that adds golden mushroom polenta, and the Cauliflower and Chickpea Bowls with Cumin Yogurt Sauce, a vegetarian standout she calls one of the best in the book (she always doubles the creamy yogurt sauce!).

Musgrave recommends her Simplified Steak Diane for an at home date night, a classic steakhouse dish paired with a crisp salad. Coming from a large family of forty cousins, she also shares her roasted tomato sauce recipe perfect for homemade meatballs best served with burrata, garlic bread and a Caesar salad, the ultimate family meal. For a taste of home, Musgrave’s ode to St. Louis is her take on Lemon Paccheri Pasta, inspired by her favorite dish at Katie’s Pizza & Pasta that blends lemon, cauliflower and pistachios.

Tasting Every Day will be released on Nov. 24, available on both Amazon and the Tasting with Tina website. From plant-forward meals and unique pastas to vibrant salads and nourishing bowls, Musgrave’s debut invites her fellow home cooks to the beauty of cooking with recipes designed to fit seamlessly into their busy everyday schedule.

Editor’s note: Musgrave has done photography work for Sauce Magazine.

Several local businesses have joined forces for a heartfelt cause on Friday, Nov. 7, as The Wine Merchant, Café Napoli and Pinnacle Imports host Nora’s Sparkle of Love Project’s Wine & Spirit Tasting and fundraising event honoring the memory of 7-year-old Nora Bunn. The event will take place from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Wine Merchant located at 9200 Olive Blvd. in Olivette, with all proceeds going to support pediatric brain tumor research and families affected by childhood brain cancer.

With a “purpose with every pour,” the elegant and layered Zinfandel is composed of rich notes of blackberry, cherry, raspberry, cracked pepper, and spice. Attendees will have the opportunity to sample and purchase the wine at the event.

Surrounded by immersive street art and vibrant murals, the space doubles as both a lounge and an art gallery, frequently hosting exhibitions that spotlight local St. Louis artists. High-fidelity audiovisuals set the mood with specialty cocktails including the Skee Yee, a strong mix of rum, vodka, gin, lime, simple syrup, and grenadine, inspired by St. Louis’ own Sexyy Red and the StarBoy, a nod to The Weeknd, made with vodka, lemon, simple syrup, and lavender.

Sophie’s also hosts Cypher Nights, A Turn at the Table (an open DJ and turntablist forum), Motown Throwdown, and a rotating calendar of weekly events. Sophie’s is open Wednesday to Saturday from 1 p.m. to 1:30 a.m.

The Best Steakhouse
I have such fond memories of visiting The Best Steakhouse with my parents, located just across the street from the iconic Fox Theatre. Since 1964, this cafeteria-style restaurant has been a local staple for its familial atmosphere.

You will call out your order, likely one of their signature steaks like the porterhouse, rib-eye, or T-bone, all served with a baked potato and Texas toast. The menu features options like burgers, pork chops, chicken, fried fish, and shrimp. A nod to the founder Dean Kases’ Greek heritage, the menu also offers a gyros sandwich. You’ll also find a selection of side dishes, desserts, and a kid’s menu to choose from. The Best Steakhouse is the perfection perfect for grabbing a casual bite before heading right across the street to catch a show.

SweetArt Bakeshop + Café
SweetArt relocated its long-time home in South City’s Shaw neighborhood to a vibrant new location at The Coronado on Lindell Boulevard in Midtown this summer. The vegan, plant-based eatery is renowned for its comfort dishes, indulgent desserts, and wide selection of drinks.

Owner Reine Keis pays homage to iconic Black women writers through menu favorites like the bell hooks nachos, featuring crispy corn tortillas, house-made bean chili, and a creamy coconut-based cheese sauce. Another standout is the Zora Neale Hurston crispy chik’n sandwich, both served with the signature “love + magic” kale salad, tossed with seasonal veggies and SweetArt’s famous house magic dressing.

Looking for options? Swing by SweetArt Too at the City Foundry STL, where you’ll find mini versions of their popular burgers, nachos, loaded fries and salads. For ingredient details or dietary needs, visit their website.

City Foundry STL
The City Foundry STL food hall is the perfect spot for groups looking to enjoy a wide variety of dining options that cater to different tastes and palettes. Here, you’ll find a mix of beloved St. Louis staples and new culinary discoveries. Stop by 4 Hens Creole Kitchen for a taste of the South: po’boys, fried green tomatoes, shrimp & grits, or head to Chez Ali for Afro-Caribbean fusion dishes like jerk chicken, curry, and jollof rice. Just down the hall, you’ll find Fordo’s Killer Pizza, one of the best pizza spots in St. Louis, or dig into St. Louis-style ribs at Expat BBQ, from award-winning chef Gerard Craft and the Niche Food Group.

Other great stops include STL Toasted for toasted ravioli, Steve’s Meltdown for gourmet grilled cheese, and various dessert stalls. There’s also a fully stocked bar, perfect for grabbing a beer or cocktail before a show. If you’re feeling really fancy, head down to the basement speakeasy, None of the Above, for above-average cocktails.

Black Mountain Wine House STL
Tucked away in the Central West End, Black Mountain Wine House STL is a hidden gem, offering an impressive selection of wines in a rustic atmosphere. Once inside, it feels like you’re at a cozy cabin getaway with a crackling fireplace, perfect with a glass or bottle of wine.

Weekly specials include pasta Tuesdays, while Wednesdays feature wood-fired pizzas. The main menu includes carefully curated cheese and charcuterie boards, pork meatballs, and mac and cheese. Stay connected, as they frequently host pop-up dinners with local chefs and oysters on the half shell Fridays. Black Mountain Wine House STL welcomes nightcap seekers until midnight. Retreat Gastropub
More than just a pub, Retreat Gastropub is the place for flawless craft cocktails and elevated food. Their drink menu features limited-edition creations, seasonal specials and classic cocktails, customizable with house-made shrubs as well as non-alcoholic options. Standouts include the Caipirinha with cachaça, lime and sugar; the Seaside house martini made with vodka or gin, bordiga dry vermouth, fino sherry, lemon oil, and kombu; and Retreat’s classic Three-Toed Flamingo, a tropical, bittersweet mix of white and overproof Jamaican rum, orange bitters, Bruto Americano, Malbec, passionfruit, and lime.

The food is equally impressive, with favorites like the fried Brussels sprouts served with white bean purée, pine nuts and agrodolce; the portobello sandwich; and the Farmhouse smash burger. Dinner is served from 4-9 p.m. on Monday, Thursday, and Sunday, and until 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Reserve your spot here.

Redacted Drinks, an innovative St. Louis-based start-up, is reimagining the non-alcoholic beverage space with the introduction of its flagship brand, FLIRT™ and the launch of FLIRT™ Social Tonic.

Launched originally under the name Drink REDACTED™, the company has since rebranded and is the first in a bold new category of aphrodisiac-inspired, non-alcoholic beverages. Founded by Amber Murphy and Jordan Bauer, Redacted Drinks is setting its sights on establishing St. Louis and the Midwest as the hub of the Aphrodisiac Beverage Category, not just with a sole product, but an entire line including FLIRT™ Water and FLIRT™ Liqueur, set to debut in 2026.

The FLIRT™ Social Tonic is an elevated tonic and promises all the fun and feel-good effects of alcohol without the spirits, CBD, or THC. With notes of lemon, ginger, and chrysanthemum gives it a refreshing, Moscow Mule like flavor. Designed to be fun, flirty, and mood-enhancing, this full-proof social drink is infused with a blend of 1,200 mg of time-tested, plant-based aphrodisiac herbs that delivers a buzz designed to reduce social anxiety, boost confidences, spark flirtatious energy, offering a warm, confident, full-body sensation similar to that first cocktail, without blurred judgment, all within 30 minutes of sipping.

The drink contains epimedium, often referred to as horny goat weed, which increases blood flow and oxygen to the brain increasing dopamine; tongkat ali, a cortisol regulator linked to stress reduction and emotional balance; and maca root, a stimulant that helps with focus and energy.

Redacted Drinks will expand in the new year introducing FLIRT™ Water, a more casual version with a lower dose of active ingredients, and FLIRT™ Liqueur, a concentrated mixer containing over 2,000 mg of actives per ounce. This product expansion is part of the company’s broader vision to establish a full line of functional, aphrodisiac-forward drinks that reshape how people connect with themselves and others.

Spring has arrived, and there’s no better way to embrace Sunday Fundays and happy hour than at Narwhal’s Crafted.

Since opening in 2016, Narwhal’s has become a go-to destination for its signature crafted frozen cocktails — not just on summer days, but all year long. If frozen cocktails aren’t your thing, Narwhal’s offers draft cocktails as an alternative, along with a vast selection of non-alcoholic drinks. The vibe at Narwhal’s combines urban touches, like high exposed ceilings, with subtle nautical decorative elements, such as hanging ropes and anchors. Whether you’re chatting with friends, family, or even a solo date, it’s the perfect spot before heading to a Cardinals game or concert.

The spring lineup welcomes back some fan favorites designed to cater to all tastes, from sweet to bitter, with light, floral notes that are perfect for breaking free from the winter blues. Each cocktail is intentional, made from scratch using fresh, premium ingredients — no high-fructose corn syrup or artificial colors with a variety of spirit options. Want more than one? Their captivating cocktail flights are thoughtfully curated by appearance and color palette, making the ordering experience even more fun for the perfect photo op.

A few must-tries this spring include the Golden Mango Margarita, which blends gold and silver tequilas, triple sec, mango, pineapple and lime for a refreshing tropical treat. For something a bit lighter, try the Blueberry Lavender Aviation — a crisp, citrusy cocktail made with gin, crème de violette, maraschino liqueur, blueberry lavender simple syrup and lemon. For those seeking a dairy-free option, the Key Lime Pie is creamy and citrusy made with silver rum, whipped cream vodka, graham cracker simple syrup, coconut, lime and finished with vodka-infused whipped cream.

A standout favorite is the eye-catching Dragon Fruit Vodka Tonic — a vibrant, fuchsia colored cocktail that will be sure to turn heads. Made with an in-house tonic tincture featuring citrus, chinchona bark, turmeric, and more, this refreshing drink is sweetened only with the natural sugars from dragon fruit and agave nectar, making it a great, refreshing low-sugar option.

Narwhal’s has three locations: Midtown St. Louis (3906 Laclede Ave.), St. Charles (1450 Beale St., #125), and Chesterfield (17081 N. Outer 40 Road, #206). Their food truck, Norbert Jr., can be found at local events like Music at the Intersection and the upcoming Laumeier Art Fair on May 9-11, 2025. Stay updated on where Jr. will be next!

Each location features outdoor patios with fire pits, allowing you to enjoy your cocktail while soaking up the beautiful St. Louis spring weather. No matter your preference, there’s something for everyone. So, pop in this spring and find your new favorite drink!
