From cookies to classes to cookbooks, St. Louis has plenty of shops where you can support locals instead of major corporations. Whether it’s unique menu ideas or good gift options you need, check out some of these foodie-favorite locations while you’re shopping this year; you might just find something you didn’t know you were looking for.

Anchovy Book Co.
This hidden gem, a cookbook store nestled on Cherokee Street, packs a big punch in a small space. Since Anchovy Book Co. opened last year, they’ve stuck strictly to weekend hours, but squeezing into the shop for a visit is well worth the planning. Their cookbooks cover everything from the Julia Child classics to new favorites, like Matty Matheson and Alison Roman, as well as books that run the global gamut. Pantry essentials available for purchase include Fishwife tinned fish and Big Heart Tea, and they’ve also got merch and accessories. For those who prefer gifting experiences, check out Anchovy’s Tiny Bookshop Dates. These dates include exclusive access to the shop, plus a crafted snack board and complimentary bottle of wine or NA cider. Visit Anchovy Book Co. during their weekend hours, noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Drips Botanical Elements
This coffee-turned-plant store is still a must-stop for drink essentials. Drips Botanical Elements carries Dark Matter Coffee beans straight from Chicago, and they’ve got blends for every palate. Personally, we love the Starry Eyes for a dark roast, but they’ve also got espresso, light roast and a seasonal blend on rotation. Newer to the store is Artemis Tea & Botanical, which includes bags of classic offerings like masala chai and a mint blend, as well as unique options like “The Moss,” with leaves from some of the oldest tea trees in China’s Yunnan Province. Their grab-and-go cooler has ready-to-drink Dark Matter Coffee, botanical sodas and Mighty Kind cannabis seltzers. While you’re in the store, don’t miss out on the handmade terrariums, variety of plants and other locally curated gift options.
387 N. Euclid Ave., St. Louis, dripsbotanical.com

Fennel Cooking Studio
Whether you have a cooking-curious person on your gift list or want to learn something new yourself, Fennel Cooking Studio has cooking classes for every level and gift cards available this holiday season. They offer a recurring homemade pasta class, as well as seasonal features like winter cookie decorating. Fennel also has kids’ classes, as well as availability for private events. Classes are hands-on, not just demonstrations, and everything is available for eating when class is over. On Dec. 14, Fennel will be hosting a Holiday Vendor Market from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Anyone who spends $170 or more on gift cards also gets a free, mini Fennel tote bag. Check out their class schedule, and keep your eyes peeled for the upcoming launch of their online retail shop.

LeGrand’s Market & Catering
LeGrand’s has been a St. Louis shopping staple for almost 40 years. Their consistent offerings keep kitchens in stock with fresh-cut meats like steaks and roasts, deli meats and cheeses, and take-home specialties like mac ‘n cheese and pulled pork, perfect for a holiday meal. This holiday season, LeGrand’s is also featuring gift baskets with St. Louis favorites inside, plus holiday tins of everyone’s favorite, Dad’s Cookie Co. Don’t miss their local pantry offerings too, like pasta sauce straight from the Hill, pasture-raised eggs and a variety of offerings from local breweries.

The store is expanding its local merch offerings to include Lion’s Choice, including a cozy sweatshirt, classic tee and a hat perfect for stockings or under the tree. This exclusive collection is available online or in-store at Series Six. While you’re there, check out other gifts perfect for St. Louis lovers, from Donut Drive-In shirts to all sorts of Imo’s merch, plus lots of other local favorites. Downtown Kirkwood is getting into the holiday spirit. 4 Hands Brewing Co.’s first ever holiday pop-up, Cocktails and Claws, is now open in the 4 Hands + Peacemaker Lobster & Crab Co. space at 150 W. Argonne Drive in Kirkwood, where customers can pair local brews with lobster, poorboys and more.

The two businesses have been planning their collaborative event since June, and the effort shows in their specialty menus created for the pop-up. The cocktail list from 4 Hands focuses on showing off their portfolio of spirits as well as guest experience. The Resting Grinch Face is one of owner Kevin Lemp’s favorites, made up of 1220 Spirits’ Encrypted Vodka, plus white cranberry, triple sec, simple syrup and lime juice. Upon ordering, a server comes to the table with the drink in one hand and green cotton candy in the other. Guests watch as the cotton candy dissolves in the cocktail, transforming it into something perfect for the Mean One himself. Withered Oak’s rye is a substantial component of the cocktail menu, making appearances in Max on the Rocks (a One Antler Old-Fashioned), the caramel apple-inspired Sugar & Spice and the Midnight Noel, which also features amaro, plus chocolate and toasted almond bitters.

“We like to stay in our lane and really just focus on beverage,” Lemp said. “We really just trust our partner.” That partner is the team at Kevin Nashan’s Peacemaker, which designed the appetizer menu for Cocktails and Claws. While the regular Peacemaker menu is also available, the unique appetizer choices offer elevated comfort. First on the list is an order of crab claws, delivered to the table on ice with lemon and house-made Dijonnaise. The deviled eggs come topped with caviar, and the pigs in a blanket are swaddled in a garlic-Parmesan buttered bao bun. Crab cakes and Swedish meatballs round out the menu, along with a turtle brownie sundae for dessert.

Of all the 4 Hands’ locations, Lemp felt Kirkwood was the perfect spot for their first holiday pop-up. “We’re really a part of the neighborhood of Kirkwood,” he said. “We just felt like the  community would get a kick out of a big pop-up, and so we decided to just roll the dice and try it this year and see how it went.” The encroaching wintertime gives the team a chance to show off what the inside of the property can deliver. While the location has plenty of outdoor seating, popular in the warmer months, Cocktails and Claws takes place purely inside. The dining area is decked out in red and white, and guests have a perfect view of a City Wide holiday tree. “As soon as the customers walk in, we just wanted it to be explosive for them.”

For the rest of the pop-up, which runs through Dec. 31, guests can expect eventual additions to the menu, including NA cocktails. Mr. and Mrs. Claus will join the fun on Dec. 7 for a free event full of photo opportunities, games and treats meant for the whole family. A portion of sales on Kirkwood Lager will go to Kirkwood Firefighters Community Outreach. “We just want people to come in here and be reminded of the giving season,” Lemp said. “At the end of the day, everything we do is about connection.” Cocktails and Claws is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, no reservations or tickets required.

St. Louisan Tarek Husseini will be representing home bakers during Holiday Baking Championship on Monday, Nov. 3. Now a sophomore at Yale University, Husseini’s appearance will be his second on Food Network after being runner-up on Kids Baking Championship at 13 years old.

“I’ve been baking for a decade at this point,” Husseini said. He and his family are originally from St. Louis, but as a kid, they moved all over, including to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. “Famously it’s a massive desert: It has urban aspects, but it is also super hot [and] super dry.” Husseini described himself as previously being a kid who loved to play outdoors, but with the adjustment to a new environment came the need for a new hobby too. He has a massive sweet tooth, and he started baking by trying to copy a YouTube video. “I guess I just never really stopped,” he said.

When Husseini and his family moved back to St. Louis, he continued to enjoy “making a mess in the kitchen” and refined his skills further. When he was in the eighth grade, he competed on Kids Baking Championship. “I feel like I’m repeating everything I did when I was kid with more self-awareness, which is pretty cool,” Husseini said of his time on Holiday Baking Championship and the aftermath. When he was 13, his teachers let him out of class to do interviews, and now, he’s fitting them in between college classes and mid-terms.

Husseini is currently the president of Y Pop-Up, a Yale group that puts on pop-up restaurants. He credits this group for resparking his love for baking after the stress of high school. After rediscovering this passion, he applied for Holiday Baking Championship and successfully got cast. He utilized the student kitchen to practice for his upcoming appearance, while all the other contestants on his season have some sort of professional baking experience. Husseini has previously spent time teaching kids baking classes at Kitchen Conservatory, but he has no formal baking training. “Here I am at the age of 19 representing the home bakers,” he said. “There were some people baking longer than I’ve been alive.”

During filming this summer, Husseini grew close with his cast during the long days that often started with him waking up at 6 a.m. “Part of me forgot how intense the contest can feel,” he said. “I consider myself an extremely competitive human being.” He couldn’t give too many details about the contest without giving spoilers, but being in a competitive environment again unlocked ideas and techniques that he didn’t know he had in him. Once he got into a groove, he stopped feeling intimidated by the experienced contestants surrounding him. “It made me realize that I’m better than I thought I was.”

Currently, Husseini is double-majoring in economics and global affairs at Yale University. One of his favorite classes this semester is History of Food and Cuisine, which will bring in professional chefs to connect with the class. Husseini is most looking forward to restaurateur and fellow St. Louis native Danny Meyer’s visit. While Husseini spends most of his time in New Haven, Connecticut, as a student, his family is still based in St. Louis, which is where he spends his school breaks. He cited Made. by Lia as one of his go-to bakeries in St. Louis, but most of the time, he’s baking for himself. “I like doing things you would see in a patisserie window,” he said. “For me it’s all about showcasing the ingredients you’re using, [and] my favorite things to do are things that make food look pretty.”

Tarek Husseini will appear on Food Network’s Holiday Baking Championship on Monday at 7 p.m. CT, with streaming available the following day.

The Sports Bra opening in former Boogaloo space in Maplewood https://www.saucemagazine.com/places-2/places/the-sports-bra-opening-in-former-boogaloo-space-in-maplewood/ Tue, 28 Oct 2025 17:58:01 +0000 https://www.saucemagazine.com/?p=47673

The Sports Bra, a female-owned sports bar, is coming to Maplewood.

The Sports Bra, a female-owned sports bar, is coming to Maplewood. The business, founded in Portland, shows only women’s sports as part of its mission to empower women. The St. Louis area is officially getting the first franchise location, owned by Heather Hill and Sara Pilsner, at 7344 Manchester Road.

Signs popped up recently on Manchester Road announcing that locals can expect an opening date in early 2026. “The bones in here are good,” co-owner Heather Hill said of the old Boogaloo space. They plan to keep the original wood floors, as well as the double-sided bar, though the new bar top will be made of reclaimed wood from a basketball court. Customers can expect at least 10 TVs on the inside, which will hold up to 160 people. The patio will be getting its own TVs, as well as rain guards and heaters to extend patio season as long as possible.

Much of the Boogaloo’s essence will remain intact at The Sports Bra, including an homage to the beloved swing chairs. // Credit: photo by Riley Hansen

“Part of the appeal of a franchise is that we didn’t have to build a menu from scratch,” Hill said. The Sports Bra has classic pub fare, like soft pretzels and wings, but they’ve also got Vietnamese clay pot-style pork ribs and a tempeh Reuben. Guests can make their smash burger vegan or their tuna melt gluten-free, allowing this already accessible menu to be dietary friendly as well. Every franchise location (fans in Indianapolis, Boston and Las Vegas will see their own spots soon) gets the opportunity to add one of their own items to each category on the menu. Hill can’t reveal what’s going on the St. Louis menu yet, but she’s already got some ideas.

It wouldn’t be a sports bar without a drink menu, and The Sports Bra has it all, from cocktails to mocktails to beer on tap. The Title IX features bourbon, peach liqueur and mint, while the Pickle Ball includes dry gin, dry vermouth and pickle juice.

“The ultimate goal of The Sports Bra is to empower women, across any aspect,” Hill said. “Anytime we can hire women, promote women, have women do construction, get women-owned breweries, distilleries, [that’s] what we’re going to go with.” The business is also committed to supporting local as much as possible too. To this end, Hill has been doing tastings around the area, including at Noboleis Vineyards for their ciders.

“I really think there’s a need in every city,” Hill said of female-centered spaces like The Sports Bra. According to a 2023 article in Forbes, 15% of sports media coverage for the previous year was about women’s sports, which was a vast improvement from around 5% in 2019. The numbers are expected to keep growing, and Hill credits social media and “the Caitlin Clark effect” for part of this. “My algorithm started to change,” she said. “I think every generation has that Caitlin Clark. For me it was the ‘99ers, and then it was Diana Taurasi. Sue Bird has always been iconic. The unfortunate thing is it has never been broadcast.”

As Hill stood outside of the site of what will soon be The Sports Bra for a photo opp, a young woman approached her. “Is this what’s going here?” she asked, referencing the signs. When Hill affirmed it was, the woman said she couldn’t wait to tell her friend. The excitement in St. Louis is already ramping up for space of female-empowerment like this one; Hill has been hosting watch parties with The Sports Bra in partnership with local businesses like The Great Grizzly. The next event is at Bluewood Brewing on Oct. 26 for the USWNT vs. Portugal match.

When the bar opens, hours will mirror what the community wants, and it will remain family-friendly as opposed to a late-night bar. “There would be nothing better than to have a little 9U softball team put in a reservation after they won a game,” Hill said.

Keep an eye on The Sports Bra’s socials for updates and more watch parties in the future.

Downtown St. Louis is home to a new late-night coffee spot. Carrie Harris, owner of The Crack Fox, recently opened Odditeas Cafe & Art Lounge in the next door space at 1116 Olive St. The venture combines a community need for an evening cafe with Harris’s long-held desire to own an art gallery and retail space. Customers can enjoy espresso and tea drinks with house-made syrups, as well as food like flatbreads and wraps, while checking out art and products from local vendors.

Harris described Odditeas as a “no-pressure drinking environment” where customers can come to experience community. The house-made syrups she offers include lavender, cardamom coconut and Mexican cinnamon, all of which can be used in espresso drinks. The distinct cocktail menu focuses on barrel-aged spirits and infusions. Harris’s commitment to freshly made ingredients shines in the drinks, like the carajillo. This barrel-aged coffee cocktail features the cardamom coconut syrup and can also be turned into a tea martini. Outside of cocktails and coffee, Odditeas serves the London Tea Merchants line. These teas are also the base for the unique mocktail offerings, which aim to replicate the taste of cocktails without NA spirits.

Currently, Odditeas is open for lunch Thursday through Saturday, and the menu includes a dill chicken salad sandwich on a croissant, as well as curried rice and flatbreads that run the spectrum from sweet to savory. The upcoming fall menu will feature hardy items like soup, fried rice and mac ‘n cheese. In the near future, the cafe will open for breakfast and offer breakfast sandwiches and quick-grab staples like overnight oats and chia pudding.

“The Crack Fox has always had this distinct subculture vibe,” Harris said. “I’m really proud of that, but I also wanted to create a space where the daytime crowd could feel welcome too.” Harris took over The Crack Fox six months after it opened. In the 15 years since she’s made it her own, she’s also had the dream of expanding into the next door space. It wasn’t until after she got the keys to 1116 Olive St., however, that she knew what she wanted to do with it. She detailed the experience of being out late one night and wishing she could find somewhere to get a cup of coffee; there, the idea for Odditeas Cafe & Art Lounge was born.

“I got to decorate and design everything in here – that was really, as an artist, such a dream,” Harris said of Odditeas. Customers can peruse the artwork covering the walls, as well as local merchandise like vintage clothing and handmade jewelry. The mezzanine level is an intimate space where groups can meet or individuals can get away with a book or laptop. It’s also the perfect spot to get a closer look at the ceiling that Harris has handpainted with stars and sunbursts to mimic the night sky. These high ceilings make it a perfect space for the aerial artists, among other performers, who put on events at the cafe.

Odditeas Cafe & Art Lounge will be hosting its grand opening sometime in December, but customers can already visit from 5 p.m. to midnight on Tuesday and Wednesday, while Thursday through Sunday the hours will go from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. (or later). Expanded breakfast hours and food options will come later this fall.

Chris’ Pancake & Dining will soon be adding a third location. This week, signs appeared at the old TGI Friday’s location at 5262 S. Lindbergh Blvd., stating “Get Ready South County.” A post on a local Affton Facebook group featuring a photo of the sign garnered almost 3,000 reactions at the time of this article, as well as many comments expressing excitement for a new breakfast spot for the residents of South County.

The restaurant already has two open locations and is part of Bartolino’s Hospitality Group, which also owns the three Bartolino’s in St. Louis. Their flagship location of Chris’ at 5980 Southwest Ave. has been serving breakfast and lunch since 1987, including classics like omelettes and benedicts, as well as new concepts like breakfast fried rice. Chris’ @ the Docket opened at 100 N. Tucker Blvd. in 2016, keeping the heart of the original restaurant while using a similar yet refined menu of their own, featuring items like breakfast tacos and chicken and waffles. Both locations also have diverse drink menus of coffee, mimosas and cocktails. For lunch, customers can choose from a variety of fresh meals, from salad to a buffalo chicken sandwich to a half-pound smash burger.

A representative for Chris’ Pancake and Dining confirmed that the business just signed the papers for their new space on Lindbergh, and they hope to have the new location open in the spring of 2026. Due to being in the early planning stages, not much more information has been released at this time. We will continue to update as more details are available. In the meantime, be sure to check out the individual locations’ online menus to find the Chris’ Pancake and Dining that’s perfect for your palate.

Sugarwitch has added new Saturday morning hours. The shop, located at 7726 Virginia Ave. in south St. Louis, is known for their unique ice cream sandwiches, all named after witches from literature or folklore. In October, they began opening at 8 a.m. with an expanded coffee and pastry menu.

The standard coffee menu includes classics like drip coffee, cold brew and espresso beverages, but Sugarwitch brings their signature flair with house specials like the Tiramisu Cold Brew and a Cereal Milk Affogato. They also have flavors that will rotate seasonally; for October, those currently include Black Sesame Cream, Pumpkin Spice or Salted Honey. For breakfast, guests can try house-made pastries like a hummingbird loaf and an everything bagel scone, along with a checkerboard cookie, egg tart and French madelines.

Sugarwitch is capitalizing on the business momentum they gathered this summer and hoping to keep it going as cooler weather returns. Co-owner Sophie Mendelson credited cafe manager Cam Bright, who has been wanting to bring morning coffee to the store, as well as the back-of-house team with the new offering. “This is a great way for them to flex their pastry skills and try out fun ideas,” she said.

The back-of-house team is making these pastries in-house. For inspiration, the team will be using seasonal ingredients, such as fig leaves and American persimmons, as well as tastes from travels abroad and input from the neighborhood on what they’d like to see on the morning menu.

According to Mendelson, Sugarwitch is planning on taking the morning hours slowly, but if Saturday mornings are a hit, they’d love to add more morning hours in the future. For now, guests can enjoy the regular hours they’re used to on Thursdays and Fridays from 3 to 10 p.m., Sundays 1 to 8 p.m., and the new Saturday hours with a full menu from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Catch them at the Tower Grove Farmers’ Market too, while the season lasts.

Drips Botanical Elements opens in the Central West End https://www.saucemagazine.com/places-2/places/drips-botanical-elements-opens-in-the-central-west-end/ Fri, 10 Oct 2025 14:02:04 +0000 https://www.saucemagazine.com/?p=47451

The Central West End has welcomed Drips Botanical Elements, a plant store with deep roots in the coffee business.

The Central West End welcomed its newest resident business last week with the opening of Drips Botanical Elements, a plant store with deep roots in the coffee business. They can be found at 387 N. Euclid Ave., where they’ll provide the community with a variety of plants, custom terrariums, jewelry, coffee and more, many of which are sourced from local vendors.

When Tres Johnson opened the first iteration of Drips back in Omaha, it was a full-fledged coffee shop mixed with a gallery for Johnson’s artwork. Then, he met Becki Murabito, who joined the business eight years ago. Their original space flooded in January 2020, just before the pandemic. In the aftermath, they decided to pivot and reopen as a plant shop. Johnson studied horticulture in his hometown of Cape Girardeau, and Murabito worked at her family’s business, Rainbow Gardens, in Omaha. The change came naturally to them. “People were coming in to see the plants in the shop anyway when we closed down,” Johnson said, “so it was kind of morphing into that.”

While Johnson and Murabito have no interest in pursuing the restaurant business again themselves, they are staying true to their roots by offering a variety of coffee beans and ready-to-drink cans from their friends at Dark Matter, based in Chicago. Drips currently carries five different kinds of whole bean coffee from Dark Matter, so every palate can find something to take home. These beans include a special blend that changes monthly, allowing customers the regular chance to try something new.

While Drips Botanical Elements may have been born in Omaha, Johnson lived in St. Louis in his 20s and spent quite a bit of time in the Central West End as an employee of Left Bank Books. He and Murabito traveled back to St. Louis every year to visit the Missouri Botanical Garden, and when the idea arose to move Drips Botanical Elements to St. Louis, their current location on Euclid was the first space they toured.

Both Johnson and Murabito agreed that the name Drips has been a perfect one over the years, even through their evolutions. First, the drips could refer to painting and artwork, then to coffee, and now to the water that nourishes their plants. Many of the other items offered in-store are locally sourced, including from vendors that they discovered at the Tower Grove Farmers’ Market.

The space has plenty of natural light from the front-facing window, and the plants are arranged in order of how much light each one needs to thrive, allowing everyone to find something that’s right for their own living space, whether that be cacti or terrariums and everything in between. “Learning how to take care of [plants] is something we do together, and we can walk you through doing it,” Johnson said, “because we want you to keep coming and buying more plants – not because they’re dying, but because you love plants.” Johnson’s custom-made terrariums evolve with his inspiration at the time, and the store carries everything from small jars to large tanks perfect for living creatures (be sure to ask for information about their isopods).

“It’s so cool to be a part of the Central West End because everyone is so supportive,” Murabito said. “We’re really looking forward to joining that and adding what Drips brings to the equation.” Drips Botanical Elements is open Tuesday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
